Mel Wilson Calls on Mayor Garcetti & Council President Martinez to Expand Vaccination and COVID-19 Testing Requirement

“LA City’s vaccination requirement & once a week testing is a good first step, but we need to test twice a week and expand the order to include all contractors doing business with LA.”

July 29, 2021, Los Angeles—Businessman and former Metro Board Member Mel Wilson called on Mayor Garcetti and the Los Angeles City Council to expand the scope of the newly released vaccination requirement for city employees. Wilson is a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles.

Citing the transmission risk of the highly contagious Delta variant and increases in COVID-19 cases among unvaccinated Angelenos, Wilson wants city leaders to do even more to increase vaccinations and testing for city employees and contractors.

“LA City’s vaccination requirement and once a week testing is a good first step, but we need to test twice a week and expand the order to include all contractors doing business with the City.” Wilson continued, “We can do more to incentivize city workers and contractors to get vaccinated. Requiring twice a week testing not only is good public health policy in controlling the spread of the virus, it also could increase vaccination rates. Working families, students and small businesses are relying on a vaccinated public to work, attend school and help businesses recover and grow.”

Given the incubation period can be up to 14 days, the CDC recommends testing at least once a week. More information from the CDC as of July 1, 2021 regarding the frequency of testing and testing as a prevention strategy can be found at: Overview of Testing for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) | CDC.
