Empowering Women Since 1881

The American Association of University Women Alhambra-San Gabriel Branch Establishes A Scholarship At East Los Angeles College

MONTEREY PARK, CA-East Los Angeles College Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Alhambra-San Gabriel Branch Scholarship.
Established in 1881, AAUW donates $3.7 million annually in fellowships, grants, and awards that encourage educational and professional development and resources for members facing employment challenges. Furthermore, the organization provides networking and mentoring opportunities for professional and personal growth, in-person and online; relevant and timely information on issues impacting women and girls through our research, magazine, and action briefings, all available with exclusive member benefits and discounts; and the chance to build lifelong relationships with like-minded women.
“As ELAC alumni who went on to earn a MA, I feel that it is important that I pay it forward. I consider this an investment in future generations and welcome the chance to give others the opportunity to prepare themselves at this first level of higher education so that they are able to continue their studies and be successful in the field of their choice.” Said Betty Morin, Member of AAUW Alhambra-San Gabriel Branch
“As our nation and college just celebrated the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote, this Scholarship is befitting the continuation of our work to empower women. We are honored and humbled by the AAUW Alhambra-San Gabriel Branch for establishing this Scholarship at East Los Angeles College,” said Marissa B. Castro-Salvati, President of the ELAC Foundation.
“A donation to the AAUW Alhambra-San Gabriel Branch Scholarship is not only an investment in the promise of our young people. It is also a way to acknowledge our own successes in life. It is a way to give back and share the help each of us has received in our own lives. And finally, it is a way that each of us can add our voice to what tomorrow’s society will look like.” Kiem Tjong
“Supporting students in their educational journeys is a most exciting endeavor. Through funding, students gain personal acknowledgment and affirmation. They feel celebrated for their personal worth and potential. It’s a collaboration between the donor and student whereby the student can feel trust and validation…and not so alone or isolated. I believe our students are the best investment.”  Elena Loredo Velarde
“I am grateful to the American Association of University Women and the ELAC Foundation for making this scholarship a reality. This will help to empower current and future women scholars at ELAC to achieve their academic goals.”
