Murphy the Shire Horse Helps Rescue Kitten
It’s not every day that the Los Angeles County Director of Animal Care and Control gets to participate in a hands-on animal rescue! On Sunday, August 22, 2021 Director Marcia Mayeda and a friend were riding their horses at Mccoy’s Equestrian Center in Chino Hills, California when they heard the plaintive cries of a kitten stuck in a tree. Passersby were trying to help the kitten, but nobody could reach her. Marcia’s horse Murphy, a 17.2 hand high rare Shire draft horse, was just what was needed. Marcia rode Murphy under the tree and coaxed the kitten to a lower branch where she was able to safely rescue it (video link below). The little kitten rode home with Marcia and was quickly placed into a new, loving home.
“Rescuing this little kitten really made my day,” said Marcia. “It was a heartwarming reminder of how rewarding it is to be involved in the animal welfare field. While my administrative duties often preclude me from opportunities like this, it brought me back to my early days as an animal welfare officer and I’m glad my animal handling skills had not become rusty!”
The Department of Animal Care and Control reminds residents that more kittens are available for adoption at all seven Los Angeles County Animal Care Centers. View available animals and make an appointment for adoption on the Department’s website at www.animalcare.lacounty.gov.
