Opening the Door to Opportunity

Homekey 2The County of Los Angeles is gearing up for another round of Homekey, an innovative program that has already created thousands of homes and shelters for people experiencing homelessness throughout the State of California – all in record time and for a fraction of the usual cost.

Homekey 1 Family

Homekey Round 1 enabled the County to purchase 10 hotels and motels that are now serving as homes or shelters for about 900 men, women and children considered particularly vulnerable to complications from COVID-19. Each unit will have been converted into permanent housing with a range of supportive services by mid-2023.

The County is poised to build on that success with Homekey Round 2.

HOMEKEY ROUND 2

The State of California has made $1.45 billion in Homekey Round 2 funding available to local jurisdictions and their co-applicants in its continued effort to rapidly expand and sustain housing for people at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness during the pandemic.

Of that total, nearly $360 million has been set aside for jurisdictions within Los Angeles County. Applications for this geographic set-aside funding must be received by January 31, 2022.

Administered by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), Homekey Round 2 funding is intended for the acquisition, rehabilitation, construction, management and/or operation of various types of property that can be used as, or converted into, homes and shelters for people experiencing homelessness.

The County may apply for Homekey Round 2 funding either independently or jointly with a nonprofit or for-profit corporation.
