MONTEREY PARK, CA – East Los Angeles College (ELAC) awarded 102 scholars with $51,950 in scholarships for Fall 2021. The Scholarships included the 96 Osher Scholarships and six newly established scholarships. The new scholarships are the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Alhambra-San Gabriel Branch Scholarship, Julie Benavides Student Success Scholarship, and Mercy Udeochu Memorial Scholarship.
“I am proud of all the students who were awarded scholarships and am excited to see new scholarship opportunities for all our students. Being able to eliminate financial barriers for education is key to the success for every student,” said ELAC President Alberto Roman.
“The ELAC Foundation Board is proud of all our scholars who were awarded a scholarship in 2021. In addition, we are honored and humbled by all the newly established scholarships at East Los Angeles College, as this is a testament that shows how people believe in the future of our ELAC students,” said Marissa B. Castro-Salvati, President of the ELAC Foundation.
“I am so excited that we have initiated a first-generation scholarship. Coming from a first-generation background myself, I know the sacrifices of my parents, who had truly little means, to support my success, but envisioned the value of a college education. Although there are programs that include first-generation students, this Scholarship emphasizes the importance of celebrating the identity of first-generation students, acknowledging the community cultural wealth they bring to the college, and supporting their sense of belonging. Hopefully, it enhances their goal aspiration as they continue their journey to economic well-being and make a commitment to complete their degrees and then give back in supporting others like themselves,” said Dr. Julie Benavides. “Most staff, faculty, and administrators at ELAC were first-generation college students, so they understand the challenges in navigating college. So, I want to thank all those who have joined me in contributing to this First-Gen Scholarship endeavor. Their success is our success. Thank you and keep it going!” added Dr. Benavides.
