Hahn Calls on Metro to Address Safety Issues for Union Station Janitors
Los Angeles, CA — Today, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who also serves on the LA Metro Board of Directors, sent a letter to Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggens in support of Union Station janitors who have experienced increased violence since the pandemic:
“What is happening to janitors at Union Station is unacceptable,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “No one should have to go through what these essential workers are experiencing. I support and stand with these workers in calling for increased security and better safety protocols to protect them so they can do their jobs without fearing for their lives.”

Dear Ms. Wiggins,
I am writing you after the recent news regarding attacks on janitors who are maintaining Los Angeles Union Station. This is an unacceptable situation. The janitors have requested a number of worker-centered solutions, which I would like to echo. While it is encouraging to see Metro staff working quickly to address these concerns, the Board needs to know why these issues are just now coming to light and how Metro will ensure that the steps that staff are now taking will improve the situation.
As part of the CEO’s report to the Board this month, I would request that we be provided a thorough description of the steps under way to address these safety and security concerns. The public has a right to know as much as the Board does, and it is important that we discuss these matters openly.
These workers are essential workers, and they should not have to fear for their lives every time they punch in to keep our region’s premier transit station clean for its many patrons. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
JANICE HAHN
