Alhambra Receives Historic State Funding to Build Community Center
ALHAMBRA, CA (July 01, 2022) – On Thursday, June 30th, the California State Legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom approved the second-largest district funding request in the state budget of $25 million for the City of Alhambra’s first community center located at Shorb and 6th Street.
“This sizable funding will be put towards Alhambra’s very first state of the art community center providing facilities such as a native plant garden, multipurpose classrooms and fitness areas to residents,” said Councilwoman Sasha Renée Pérez. “This is a historic investment by the state into the San Gabriel Valley.”
The supporting efforts of Senator Susan Rubio and Assemblymember Mike Fong were applauded by city officials. Speaking on the funding request, Mayor Jeff Maloney expressed his gratitude to the members of the legislature for their key role in securing funding for Alhambra’s first community center.
“I want to express my gratitude to each person who made this happen, including Senator Susan Rubio, who championed this from the beginning, and Assemblymember Mike Fong who made it his top budgetary priority,” said Mayor Maloney. “We also need to recognize our City staff and City Manager Jessica Binquist, in particular, for bringing focus to this effort and helping to transform it from a concept into a fully-funded project.”
