Commemorating the International Day of Democracy

This International Day of Democracy, we underscore our commitment to democracy as we strive for a more inclusive, equitable, and peaceful world.  As President Biden has emphasized “…we must start with diplomacy rooted in America’s most cherished democratic values:  defending freedom, championing opportunity, upholding universal rights, respecting rule of law, and treating every person with dignity.”

By placing human rights at the heart of our foreign policy, the United States advances respect for fundamental freedoms globally.  We know that respect for human rights and dignity is essential to lasting peace and sustained prosperity. This respect is grounded in our own experience as a democracy—far from perfect, but continuously pushing for a more just and equitable society.

Words must be matched by actions, which is why the United States is working with partner governments, civil society, and the private sector in a “Year of Action” devoted to fulfilling pledges made at the December 2021 Summit for Democracy.  These pledges include U.S. commitments made under the Presidential Initiative for Democratic Renewal, a landmark set of policy and foreign assistance initiatives that build on our work to bolster worldwide democracy, counter corruption, and defend human rights.  Efforts under the Initiative range from reinforcing independent media to harnessing technology for democratic renewal to advancing the civic participation of marginalized populations.  President Biden will host a second Summit for Democracy next year to take stock of progress made on these commitments that strengthen democratic institutions, safeguard against authoritarian threats, and ensure democracies can deliver for their citizens.

Every day, we stand in solidarity with people across the globe who are putting democratic principles into practice—whether by protecting the freedoms of their homeland from aggression, countering hatred online or in person, vigorously debating issues of the day, or peacefully protesting in the public square.  On this International Day of Democracy, we resolve to exercise our cherished democratic freedoms toward a brighter future for all.
