State of the Union live updates: Biden addresses Congress, calls for ‘consensus’

Biden highlighted the 12.1 million jobs the U.S. has created under his watch. The nation added 517,000 jobs in January, blowing away analysts’ predictions of slowing job growth. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.4 percent, the lowest since 1969.

“Two years ago, our economy was reeling. As I stand here tonight, we have created a record 12 million new jobs, more jobs created in two years than any president has ever created in four years,” Biden said.

Biden will also try to appeal to Republicans in his address, calling on them to work with him over the next two years of a divided Congress.
