AAPI Victory Alliance Applauds White House Nomination of Julie Su to be next Secretary of Labor
WASHINGTON — Moments ago, the White House announced President Joe Biden’s intent to nominate Julie Su, the Deputy Secretary of Labor, to now lead the agency. If confirmed, she would be the Biden Administration’s first AAPI Cabinet secretary.
AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:
“I’m proud to lead AAPI Victory Alliance in congratulating Julie Su on this historic nomination. It is incredible to see the President nominate the current deputy labor secretary to be his administration’s first AAPI Cabinet secretary.
“Julie Su has fought to protect workers and workers’ rights throughout her career. As a lawyer for low-wage and immigrant workers, she won restitution for over 70 undocumented Thai garment workers who were forced to work under inhumane conditions, and also had wages stolen. Deputy Secretary Su also previously served as California’s Labor secretary where she continued to protect workers regardless of their immigrant status.
“We applaud the President for continuing to diversify his cabinet with Julie Su’s nomination. AAPI Victory Alliance has been working with our partners in the AAPI community since 2020 in an effort commonly called “AAPI46.” Our goal has been to work with the Administration to uphold our shared values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in staffing the federal government at all levels. This is why it is so inspiring and heartening to see the President nominate the most diverse slate of appointees in American history.”
