ELAC Foundation Awards Record Number of Scholarships for Spring 2023

MONTEREY PARK, CA – East Los Angeles College (ELAC) awarded 242 scholars $199,867 in scholarships for Spring 2023 marking the greatest number of scholarships awarded in a single semester at ELAC. The scholars joined ELAC President Alberto J. Román, Los Angeles Community College District 1st Vice President Nichelle Henderson, The ELAC Foundation President Marissa Castro-Salvati, and others for a celebration ceremony last week.

These scholarships are managed and dispersed by the East Los Angeles College Foundation and they showcase an extraordinary commitment to education and empowering the next generation of leaders. The ELAC Foundation also announced a new endowment which will be another opportunity for ELAC students who need financial support for their academic goals.

The new endowment, “The Reyna Valadez We Champion ELAC Scholars Scholarship,” is named after the founder of Communities of San Gabriel Valley Project Access and an adjunct professor at ELAC, Ms. Reyna Valadez.  A proud Husky, Ms. Valadez is the newly elected Vice President of the ELAC Foundation Board of Directors and the ELAC Alumni Association Board member. She has over 20 years of public policy, non-profit leadership, and community development.

The scholarship is designed to tackle the broad opportunities and challenges facing our communities, like urbanization, inequalities, intergenerational disadvantages, demographic shifts, environmental changes, and economically distressed neighborhoods; the Communities of San Gabriel Valley Project Access works to help eliminate barriers and create opportunities for change.
