LA COUNTY’S BREATHE PROGRAM EXPANDS TO SERVE FORMER FOSTER YOUTH

LA County’s innovative BREATHE guaranteed income program is proud to announce an expansion to include support for former foster youth from the Department of Children and Family Services’ (DCFS). The program will award 200 randomly selected qualifying former DCFS foster youth $1,000 a month for two years.

Former foster youth interested in applying can find more information and view full list of applicant requirements at: breathe.lacounty.gov. The enrollment period opens June 20, 2023 and the deadline for applications is July 3, 2023. Selection will not depend on the timing of entries. Applicants can apply online or use a mobile phone, computer, or tablet.

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by individuals transitioning out of the foster care system, the expansion aims to provide essential resources and assistance to empower these young adults as they navigate their path towards independence and success.

“I’m proud that the expansion of Breathe: LA County’s Guaranteed Income Program, will intentionally include foster youth, who are one of our most vulnerable populations” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. “I trust that the findings from this pilot will sharpen our ability to disrupt the cycle of poverty by investing directly in our residents and communities that are disproportionately impacted.”

“Young people exiting the foster care system need our support as they pursue their education, career, and dreams,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “The expansion of LA County’s BREATHE Guaranteed Income Program to include former foster youth makes it one of the longest-running and largest in the nation with $40.8 million in direct payments. By collaborating with community partners, foster care agencies, educational institutions, and local nonprofits, BREATHE aims to bridge the gap and provide essential support for young people, who deserve our support.”
