VISION SCREENINGS FOR EAST LOS ANGELES FAMILIES

Helen Keller Vision Screening Event Brings Critical Care to

Public Housing

Los Angeles, September 13, 2023 – Earlier this month, the Nueva Maravilla Public Housing Development, along with its partners at East LA Rising, welcomed the Helen Keller International Group to host a Helen Keller Vision Screening event who provided free vision screenings and glasses, if required, to families.

Vision loss can have detrimental effects on all aspects of life including hindering child and adult learning, the ability to earn a living, and remain safe in one’s environment. With this in mind, the Helen Keller staff conducted comprehensive vision screenings for Nueva Maravilla children, adults, and seniors onsite. Each screening was approximately 30 minutes long, with a licensed optometrist onsite to screening patients and provide vision prescriptions. If needed, families could also choose to get free eyeglasses directly after their screening.

The Nueva Maravilla Public Housing Development is one of several public housing developments owned and managed by the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA). Nueva Maravilla houses approximately 1,300 residents, including seniors.

“The LACDA encourages well-being, and we want to see our public housing families happy and healthy,” said Emilio Salas, LACDA Executive Director. “Taking care of our vision can be an overlooked crucial part of healthcare, which is why East LA Rising and our Nueva Maravilla staff worked diligently to bring this critical resource to our families. The LACDA is proud to see this event was a great success.”

The Helen Keller Vision Screening was completed through the LACDA’s partnership with the East LA Rising Organization. East LA Rising operates in the East Los Angeles area with children ages 5-18. To learn more about the organization, please click here.
