Asian Hall of Fame 2024 Honorees Announced Outstanding Chinese-Americans on the List

LAPost Los Angeles (October 19, 2024) – The 2024 Asian Hall of Fame Honoree Awards Ceremony took place on October 19 at the historic Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Connie Chung, the 2016 Asian Hall of Fame Honoree, was awarded the “Asian Hall of Fame Centennial Lifetime Achievement Award.”

As a cultural, educational, and research institution advocating for Asian rights and progress, the Asian Hall of Fame is committed to elevating the influence of Asians across the United States and globally. The “Honoree Awards” ceremony is one of Los Angeles’ most prestigious events celebrating outstanding Asians. Due to the high caliber of individuals on the list, the awards are seen as a true reflection of Asian strength and influence.

This year, several distinguished Chinese-Americans made the list, including renowned comedian Joe Wong, Hollywood star Ke Huy Quan, Singaporean entrepreneur and chairman of Hong Leong Group Kwek Leng Beng, founder and managing partner of Silicon Valley’s Amino Capital Larry Li, Silergy Co-CEO Bing Xie, and Crystal Kung Minkoff, the 76th-generation descendant of Confucius and the first Chinese-American cast member on the popular reality show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH).

Joe Wong is the first Asian to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman and the first Asian to perform stand-up comedy at the White House. Larry Li, as the founder of Amino Capital, has achieved remarkable success in the Silicon Valley investment arena, with the fund having invested in over 160 high-tech companies, yielding impressive returns. Ke Huy Quan, a Vietnamese-born Chinese-American, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 95th Academy Awards in 2023 for his role in the fantasy film Everything Everywhere All at Once, becoming the second Asian actor to receive this accolade.

Additionally, National Merit Awards were presented at the ceremony to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the Asian community. Chinese-American Brandon Tsay received the “Asian Advocacy Award.”

This year’s “In Memoriam Inductees” included Hollywood’s first Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong and the late internationally renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa.

Maki Hsieh, the Chinese-American CEO of the Asian Hall of Fame, performed a violin solo during the event. Jiaoying Summer, the first Chinese-American comedian to headline at New York’s Apollo Theater and dubbed the “leading lady of Los Angeles comedy” by The Los Angeles Times, served as an award presenter, giving the award to Joe Huang while also performing a live stand-up set.

Other honorees included Korean-American Eva Chow, founder of KHEE Soju and known as the “Queen of Los Angeles’ Cultural Scene,” and Japanese-American Olympic figure skating bronze medalists Maia and Alex Shibutani.

Internationally renowned Japanese music legend Yoshiki, founder and leader of the groundbreaking band X JAPAN, attended the ceremony as a special guest. Known as the “godfather of visual rock” in Japan, Yoshiki’s influence has shaped the Japanese music scene for over half a century, and he is regarded as one of the greatest musicians in Asian history. Despite recent health challenges and undergoing neck surgery just a week ago, Yoshiki attended the event in a neck brace and wheelchair but stood to deliver his remarks.

The ceremony opened with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Air Force ROTC Honor Guard. It was hosted by KTLA 5 news anchor Frank Buckley, with musical performances by Soundgarden member Hiro Yamamoto, Annie Lennox band member Ed Roth, America’s Got Talent singer Maki Mae, and American Idol star Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja.

Notable Chinese-American attendees included California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, former State Treasurer John Chiang, philanthropist Charlie Zhang and his wife, actress Yan Luo, and other prominent figures like Richard Li, Sophia Li, Momo Wang, Yajing Zhang.
