Solis Mourns the Passing of Baseball Legend Fernando Valenzuela

Los Angeles, CA (October 22, 2024) – Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis released a heartfelt statement following the passing of Fernando Valenzuela, the legendary Mexican baseball pitcher best known for his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I am profoundly saddened by the news of Fernando Valenzuela’s passing. Fernando, an extraordinary pitcher whose iconic screwball and unique windup captivated fans, left an indelible mark on Major League Baseball. His trailblazing career, especially as a Latino player, was a source of immense pride and inspiration for the diverse and immigrant communities of Los Angeles, particularly within the Latino community.

I was fortunate to meet Fernando several times, and I was always struck by his genuine warmth and kind spirit. In 2022, I was honored to lead a motion that designated July 18 as ‘Fernando Valenzuela Day’ in Los Angeles County. It was a privilege to personally thank him for his dedication to our community. We reunited again in 2023 to celebrate the retirement of his jersey number 34 with the Dodgers.

Fernando’s legacy extends far beyond the field. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and by countless others whose lives he touched through his remarkable career and contributions. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family during this difficult time.”
