Hahn Brings Tamal Masa Giveaways Back to Southeast LA and South Whittier this Saturday
Hahn’s $25k grant will provide free masa and chiles for 1,000 families
Los Angeles, CA—This Saturday, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn will hold two masa giveaway events in the unincorporated communities of Walnut Park and South Whittier. One thousand participants have signed up to receive kits that each include a 10lb bag of fresh tamal masa as well as a bag of chiles secos. Hahn provided a $25,300 grant to The Whole Child for the purchase of the kits from Amapola Market, which provided the goods at a discount and delivery at no extra cost.
“In Latino homes across LA County, Christmas means steamy windows and the smell of tamales on the stove. It simply would not be Christmas without them. Last year we were able to help 400 families with this free masa, and this time we’re coming back to help even more,” said Hahn. “And I’m grateful to Amapola Market for their continued partnership to serve our families.”
Hahn first brought this giveaway to South Whittier and Lynwood last December, where 400 families received the kits. This year the giveaways are open to residents of Whittier, unincorporated Whittier, Walnut Park, Huntington Park, South Gate, Lynwood, Cudahy, Bell, Bell Gardens, Maywood, and Commerce. Participants were asked to pre-register. Registration is now closed.
Media interested in attending should RSVP to Esteban Garcia at [email protected] or (213) 304-9679. Please specify which location you would like to attend.
