Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office Honored with Three National Awards for Innovation and Public Service

LAPost/Los Angeles, Ca(July 29, 2025) — The Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office has earned national recognition with three top Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo), spotlighting its role as a leader in modernizing public services through technology, transparency, and responsiveness, especially during emergencies.

These prestigious NACo awards underscore best practices in local government that strengthen communities and enhance quality of life for residents across the country. This year’s honors for the Assessor’s Office reflect a strong commitment to modernization, accessibility, and data-driven governance.

1. Transition to a New Technology Platform

After years of planning and a $120 million investment, the Assessor’s Office completed a successful transition to a modern, cloud-based system known internally as the Assessor’s Modernization Project (AMP). The transformation replaced a decades-old, green-screen DOS mainframe and paper-based filing system with a digital platform capable of real-time data access and heightened cybersecurity.

This digital overhaul has not only streamlined internal operations but also improved public service delivery, representing a major milestone in the department’s ten-year technology modernization initiative.

2. Online Filing for Disaster Relief Claims

In response to the devastating Eaton and Palisades Fires earlier this year, which impacted thousands of property owners, the Assessor’s Office launched an innovative digital portal for submitting disaster relief claims.

Previously a paper-heavy, delayed process, the new online filing system—developed collaboratively by the Public Affairs and Communications and Information Technology divisions—allowed residents to file claims from mobile devices and track the progress in real time. This expedited access enabled affected property owners to receive assessment reductions and cash refunds within a few months after the fires.

3. Launch of the Assessor’s Data Science Program

The third award celebrates the Assessor’s groundbreaking Data Science Program, designed to bring greater transparency, equity, and precision to property assessments throughout Los Angeles County. By integrating socio-economic research with the County’s vast real estate data, the program offers valuable insights into ownership patterns and housing market disparities—data that was previously underutilized.

This initiative empowers policymakers and the public with open, accessible intelligence to drive equity-focused housing strategies. Internally, it has already improved data accuracy and modernized assessment practices to reflect real-world conditions. Los Angeles County is among the first in California to adopt such a comprehensive data-driven approach, setting a standard for other jurisdictions.

A Commitment to Smarter Government

“These awards are a testament not just to innovation, but to the dedication of public servants working every day to deliver smarter, more responsive government,” said Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang. “It is a tribute to the hard-working men and women of the Assessor’s Office. We’re honored to receive the recognition and will continue to find more efficient ways to provide excellent public service to the residents of Los Angeles County.”

From digital transformation to emergency relief and data equity, the 2025 NACo Achievement Awards reaffirm the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office as a national model of innovation and civic leadership.
