REGIONAL HOUSING TRUST REACHES MAJOR MILESTONE FUNDING MORE THAN 1,000 AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS ACROSS THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
MONROVIA, CA—The San Gabriel Valley Regional Housing Trust (SGVRHT) is celebrating a major regional milestone in its mission to address the region’s housing crisis: funding over 1,000 units of affordable housing across the San Gabriel Valley.
Building on a steady trajectory of growth since its inception in 2021, the achievement follows the SGVRHT Board’s recent approval of funding for a new housing preservation project, Mission Suites, located in the City of Pomona. This investment officially brings the agency’s regional portfolio to 1,038 affordable housing units alongside more than 130 units of interim housing shelter, representing one of the most significant collaborative housing efforts in the San Gabriel Valley.
“This milestone is more than just a number; it represents real people, families, and children who are off the streets and in safe, stable living situations,” said Baldwin Park Councilmember and SGVRHT Board Chair Emmanuel J. Estrada. “Reaching 1,000 affordable housing units demonstrates what is possible when cities come together with a shared commitment to addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing our region.”
Mission Suites comprises 119 units, consisting of one-, two-, and three-bedroom configurations that serve a mix of individuals and families. This initiative marks a significant milestone as the first affordable housing preservation project of its kind for the SGVRHT. The primary objective of this project is to protect existing affordability covenants that were at risk of expiring. Had the SGVRHT not approved this funding, the covenants would have expired by 2030, causing the units to revert to market-rate pricing. Consequently, the current residents—all of whom are low-income families earning at or below 60% of area median income—would have been at risk of displacement. Funding for the Mission Suites preservation project is allocated through the Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) program.
Since its formation, the SGVRHT has remained focused on addressing the localized impacts of the housing crisis through regional collaboration. By leveraging public funding and streamlining access to housing resources, the Trust has accelerated the development and presentation of affordable housing opportunities throughout the region. As housing affordability continues to challenge communities across California, the SGVRHT remains committed to advancing innovating housing solutions that expand access to affordable homes, reduce homelessness, and strengthen neighborhoods throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
