Kanak Jha Carries U.S. Hopes Into Round of 16 as Upsets Shake Up US Smash 2026

LAPost | Ontario, California (July 2, 2026) — Day Four of the 2026 WTT US Smash delivered another thrilling chapter at the Ontario Convention Center, with dramatic comebacks, major upsets, and history-making performances setting the stage for the Round of 16. American star Kanak Jha kept the host nation’s title hopes alive, while Egypt’s Dina Meshref made history with a landmark victory. Several of the tournament’s biggest names also survived tense encounters as the race toward the championship intensified.

Kanak Jha Keeps American Dream Alive

With home fans filling Maverick Arena, Kanak Jha continued his impressive run by defeating England’s Tom Jarvis 3-1 (11-2, 11-3, 6-11, 11-4). The victory makes Jha the last remaining American in the Men’s Singles draw after a confident performance that showcased both power and composure.

Jha, who suffered an early exit at last year’s US Smash, said he entered this year’s tournament determined to redeem himself.

“US Smash is a special event for me. I worked extremely hard after last year’s disappointment, and now I’m into the Round of 16. I’m happy with my level, but I want to keep going.”

His next challenge will be one of the tournament’s marquee matchups against reigning Europe Smash champion Truls Moregard, who narrowly escaped elimination after rallying from 7-9 down in the deciding game to defeat Germany’s Andre Bertelsmeier in a dramatic five-game battle.

Defending champion Wang Chuqin also advanced comfortably after overcoming Egypt’s Omar Assar, while title contenders Tomokazu Harimoto, Hugo Calderano, Felix Lebrun, Lin Shidong, Dang Qiu, and Jang Woojin all secured places in the last 16.

Dina Meshref Makes Egyptian Table Tennis History

The biggest emotional moment of the day belonged to Dina Meshref.

The Egyptian veteran stunned No. 14 seed Shi Xunyao 3-1 (11-4, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9), becoming the first Egyptian woman ever to reach the Round of 16 at a WTT Grand Smash tournament.

Overwhelmed after match point, Meshref celebrated through tears.

“I cannot put this into words. Beating a Chinese national team player means so much to me. This is a huge achievement, and I still can’t believe it.”

Another major upset followed as Japanese defensive specialist Hitomi Sato swept World No. 2 Wang Manyu in straight games (12-10, 11-4, 15-13), eliminating one of the tournament favorites.

Japan’s wildcard Sakura Yokoi also announced herself on the Grand Smash stage by defeating No. 12 seed Satsuki Odo in an exciting five-game contest. Trailing 6-8 in the deciding game, Yokoi mounted a remarkable comeback to book a Round of 16 meeting with Wang Yidi.

Former US Smash champion Zhu Yuling continued her impressive return to international competition, defeating France’s Prithika Pavade in straight games to comfortably reach the fourth round.

“ShaTou” Duo Survive Dramatic Mixed Doubles Test

One of the day’s most entertaining matches came in the Mixed Doubles quarterfinals.

China’s top pairing Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, affectionately known by fans as the “ShaTou” duo, fought back from two games down to defeat France’s Alexis Lebrun and Japan’s Satsuki Odo 3-2 (9-11, 10-12, 11-2, 11-6, 11-4).

Their resilience kept their title defense alive and set up a semifinal showdown with Brazil’s Hugo Calderano and Bruna Takahashi.

The other semifinal will feature top seeds Lim Jonghoon and Shin Yubin against China’s wildcard pairing Wen Ruibo and Kuai Man.

Doubles Competition Heats Up

In the Men’s Doubles event, Chinese Taipei’s experienced team of Lin Yun-Ju and Feng Yi-Hsin continued their strong campaign, while China’s Wen Ruibo and Yuan Licen upset the fifth-seeded Indian pair Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah to advance.

The Women’s Doubles semifinals are also set. Wang Manyu and Kuai Man will face wildcard pair Chen Yi and Wang Yidi, while Japan’s Miwa Harimoto and Hina Hayata will take on Korea’s Shin Yubin and Joo Cheonhui for a place in the championship match.

With the Round of 16 now finalized and the doubles competitions entering their decisive stages, US Smash 2026 has already produced unforgettable storylines—from historic breakthroughs and stunning upsets to dramatic comeback victories.
