Top-10 Medical School-NYU School of Medicine Is Now Offering Free Tuition to All Students
NYU School of Medicine announced Thursday that all new, current and future medical students would be awarded full-tuition scholarships, regardless of need or merit.
All arriving and incoming students will get a free ride, and the 442 current students will have the rest of their tuition fully paid by the new program.
“The scholarships will also be established, from here on out, to every future medical student at the school,” NYU said in a press release announcing the program.
The annual tuition costs covered by the scholarship are $55,018. In 2017, medical students owed an average of $191,000 by the time they graduated, according to a survey by the Association of American Medical Colleges.
“The debt can scare people away,” Rafael Rivera, NYU’s associate dean for admissions and financial aid, told CNN. “One of those individuals could be the one to find a cure for cancer. For us, it’s important to have the best applicant pool possible, and society deserves nothing less.”
Seventy-two percent of graduates from medical school in 2017 graduated with a median of $180,000 in debt, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges cited by the university. Professionals from NYU say this enormous debt has influenced medical students to pursue more profitable fields in the profession, rather than less financially generous ones like pediatrics or primary care.
“It addresses both physician shortages and diversity,” said Rafael Rivera, the associate dean for admissions and financial aid at the school, in a statement.
