Chicago hospital shooting: Shooter dead

CHICAGO — Police say the suspected gunman is dead and several others, including a Chicago police officer and at least one hospital employee, are in critical condition following a shooting at a hospital on Monday. The Chicago Fire Department said three victims were transferred to area hospitals in critical condition, including the officer who was shot.

Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago police spokesman, tweeted officers are doing a methodical search of Mercy Hospital & Medical Center on Chicago’s South Side. Guglielmi said the gunman was killed, but it’s unclear if he took his own life or was killed by police.

Guglielmi tweeted earlier at least one offender had been shot and police were responding to reports of multiple victims. The wounded victims were hospitalized and were undergoing treatment. A spokesman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the mayor and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson are monitoring the situation.

Officials believe the shooter targeted a woman who was shot.

A massive law enforcement presence was seen on the campus and medical staff were seen being evacuated. Guglielmi urged citizens to avoid the area. The hospital tweeted the shooting is over and said Chicago Police Department has secured the facility and the patients are safe.

Avitia said an officer arrived on the scene in an SUV and the gunman fired at the officer. He said he saw the gunman reload, fire again at the person on the ground and then go inside the hospital where more shots were fired.
