Maintaining Climate Leadership
By Amanda Davis | Sr. Manager, CR and Environment
I’m excited to announce that Symantec has scored an A- on CDP’s Climate List, a list of pioneering companies leading on environmental transparency and performance. This rigorous assessment places us in the top 22% of rated companies who received an A/A- out of 2,318 companies whose scores have been published. This is higher than the North America regional average of C, and higher than the IT & software development sector average of B.
CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) is a not-for-profit that runs a global disclosure system assisting investors, businesses, municipalities, regions, and states with managing their environmental impacts. CDP’s scoring system was created with the goal to incentivize and guide those it rates towards becoming leaders on environmental transparency and action. In 2019, over 8,400 companies and 920 cities, states and regions disclosed through CDP.
We are especially proud to maintain our leadership score in 2019 and of the areas in which we received an A—Governance, Opportunity Disclosure, Risk Disclosure, and Scope 3 Emissions (supply chain emissions); as well as the initiatives that helped us acquire this level of environmental impact performance. Some examples include:
- Setting Science-Based Targets: In 2019, Symantec participated in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a collaboration between CDP the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and the World Wildlife Fund. The SBTi approved our new, ambitious GHG targets that included reductions for our suppliers as well. As we move forward as a new company, our plan is to set new science-based targets for NortonLifeLock.
- Reducing our GHG Emissions: As Symantec, we reduced global GHG emissions by 18 percent in FY19. We worked to consolidate office space, worked with facilities teams on energy conservation projects, and migrated our data center operations to a more efficient cloud-based IT environment. NortonLifeLock will continue to focus on reducing GHG emissions as a new company.
- Engaging Suppliers to Reduce Scope 3 Emissions: We are continuing Symantec’s supply chain efforts and NortonLifeLock will engage with our suppliers to share and refine our climate-related approach, policies, and management practices.
As we look toward the future, we continue to strengthen our commitment to environmental transparency and performance.
