Public Health Reports 11 New Deaths and 816 New Positive Cases of Confirmed COVID-19 in Los Angeles County
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed 11 new deaths and 816 new cases of confirmed COVID-19. The lower case and death counts today reflect a reporting lag over the weekend.
The number of daily hospitalizations continues to decline. There are 793 confirmed cases currently hospitalized and 35% of these people are confirmed cases in the ICU. This number was over 1,000 just a couple of weeks ago and has dropped down similar to the numbers seen in April.
The decreasing number of daily hospitalizations is an important indicator because it is an accurate representation of how many people are currently seriously ill from the virus.
COVID-19 is widespread in L.A. County. To date, Public Health has identified 253,985 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, and a total of 6,208 deaths.
Because there is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19 and it is easily spread from person to person, the best way to prevent getting and spreading COVID-19 is to avoid being exposed to the virus. Always put six feet of distance between yourself and people who don’t live in your household. Everyone should wear a face covering in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household. The face covering is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. And others can spread COVID-19 to you when they have no illness symptoms.
“I send my deepest condolences to the families and friends who are grieving the loss of a loved one due to COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “We will get to a place where we are reopening more business sectors and schools, but in order to do so we still need everyone to do their part to minimize spreading COVID-19 to other people. Each of us has an opportunity and responsibility to save lives and to protect our vulnerable residents who are likely to have severe consequences if infected with COVID-19.”
Of the 11 new deaths reported today, four people that passed away were over the age of 80 years old, four people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, one person who died was between the ages of 50 and 64 years old, and one person who died was between the ages of 30 and 49 years old. Nine people who died had underlying health conditions including four people over the age of 80, four people between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, and one person between the ages of 50 and 64 years old.
Ninety-two percent of the people who died from COVID-19 had underlying health conditions. Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 5,836 people (99 percent of the cases reported by Public Health); 51% of deaths occurred among Latino/Latinx residents, 23% among White residents, 15% among Asian residents, 10% among African American/Black residents, less than 1% among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander residents and 1% among residents identifying with other races.
Testing results are available for more than 2,448,000 individuals with 10% of all people testing positive. Upon further investigation, seven cases reported earlier were not L.A. County residents.
