United States Chairs Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development 60th Anniversary Ministerial and Welcomes New Secretary General
Office of the Spokesperson
The United States is chairing the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) 60th Anniversary Ministerial Council Meeting, taking place in two parts under the theme, “Shared Values: Building Green and Inclusive Future.” Part One took place May 31-June 1, and Part Two will take place this fall.
The OECD’s 60th anniversary gives its members the opportunity to reflect upon and recommit to the shared values that brought members together six decades ago. It is a timely exercise, as members usher in a new chapter at the OECD with the first change in Secretary General leadership in 15 years. During Part One, Secretary Blinken and OECD members bid farewell to Secretary General Angel Gurria of Mexico and welcomed Secretary General Mathias Cormann of Australia to the organization.
Secretary General Angel Gurria served the organization with dedication during a period of profound change in the world economy. His leadership ensured the OECD was an essential voice in the global economic dialogue and reinforced the importance of producing evidence-based analysis that inspires better policies for better lives. His commitment to the promotion of a rules-based international economy is part of an enduring OECD legacy that the United States will continue to uphold going forward.
The United States welcomes Secretary General Mathias Cormann and looks forward to working together on the second part of the 60th anniversary Ministerial Council Meeting taking place in the fall, and onward throughout his term. Today marks a new era of OECD cooperation, as members work together to address climate change, international taxation, and labor and worker rights, among many other challenges, through the promotion of an inclusive and sustainable global economic recovery.
