Councilmember O’Farrell, Community Partners Celebrate Installation of Speed Tables on Verdugo Road
Improvements will help calm traffic and enhance safety in Glassell Park
ELYSIAN VALLEY — Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell today joined the Department of Transportation (LADOT) and local community advocates to celebrate the installation of new speed tables on Verdugo Road in the “Verdugo Village” section of Glassell Park.
“Making Verdugo Road safer has been a priority for residents in Glassell Park, and my team worked hard to bring this to fruition as soon as possible,” said Councilmember O’Farrell. “With so many pedestrians and local residents out and about in Verdugo Village, we prioritized this project to slow down traffic and make this street safer for everyone. ”
The project being completed this week brings two sets of new speed tables to Verdugo Road in the busy Verdugo Village area, which includes a thriving business corridor as well as nearby residents. Speed tables are flat-topped, longer than speed humps, and are becoming increasingly common on busy roadways like Verdugo Road. O’Farrell has previously worked to install speed tables on Temple Street in Historic Filipinotown and on Riverside Drive in Elysian Valley.
The speed tables on Verdugo Road are in addition to several safety improvements O’Farrell has brought to Glassell Park, including: a pedestrian-activated crosswalk on Fletcher Drive at Avenue 32; new stops signs on Fletcher Drive at Weldon Avenue; the installation of a left-turn signal at the intersection of Fletcher Drive and San Fernando Road; and a pedestrian drop-off zone on Marguerite Street, adjacent to Washington Irving Middle School.
