PROGRAMMING

SnailBlitz 2023
February 1 to March 31, 2023 

The public can help scientists at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County by sharing photos of snails and slugs spotted around Southern California. Whether they’re in backyards, at the local park, or along a hiking trail, every snail or slug photographed will help scientists learn more about biodiversity in our area. Participants can also vote in a contest for the best snail photos, with winners receiving NHM snail and slug swag as prizes.

Welcome Day: Pacific Islander Artist-in-Residence Program
February 11, 2023 | 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County will host a Welcome Day for visitors to learn more about an artist-in-residence program in collaboration with the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM) in Long Beach, California. Artists Maria “Lia” Terlaje Barcinas, a weaver from Guahan (Guam), and Jason/JP Pereira, a Samoan graphic artist based in Southern California, will present their work and answer questions. Visitors can also view Pacific Island cultural objects under the care of NHM’s Anthropology team, participate in a scavenger hunt, and practice the art of weaving at a craft table.
Cost: Included with general admission ($15 per adult, $12 per student and seniors age 62+, $7 per child ages 3-12, free for children age 2 and under). Online reservations recommended.

Girls in STEM Days: Oceans
February 18, 2023 | 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

This spring the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County will present Girls in STEM Days, an opportunity to participate in STEM activities and explore future career paths in a fun and engaging way. A limited number of tickets will be available for youth ages 8-18 to participate in hands-on STEM workshops (tickets are $5 per person with advanced registration). The theme for February 18 is Oceans. Guests of all ages can enjoy a Museum scavenger hunt and stop by the STEMinist Lounge to meet museum scientists and see specimens from behind the scenes. Also, visitors to the lounge can learn about ocean-related opportunities for youth and girls around the city and visit the photo booth. Plus, explore the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible, in the exhibition PRESSURE: James Cameron into the Abyss in its final days at NHM
Cost: Girls in STEM Hands-on Workshop tickets are $5 per person with advanced registration and general admission. Other activities are included with general admission ($15 per adult, $12 per student and seniors age 62+, $7 per child ages 3-12, free for children age 2 and under). Butterfly Pavilion
Open daily March 5 to August 13, 2023 | 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Wonder takes flight at the Museum! Walk among beautiful butterflies in our seasonal Butterfly Pavilion. This springtime exhibition features hundreds of butterflies, colorful native plants, and plenty of natural light to help you see these creatures flutter. With lots of flight space and a variety of resting spots, come get one of the best views in Los Angeles of these amazing insects. See all stages in the butterfly life cycle, including eggs, caterpillars feeding on leaves, and chrysalises. Count up to 30 different species, including California natives like the giant swallowtail and buckeye. Chat with museum educators and animal care specialists to find out what makes these animals so special.

2023 First Fridays
First Fridays is NHM’s annual once-a-month, after hours series featuring a mix of science, live music, DJs, signature cocktails, and more. This year’s theme is First Fridays: Fandoms and Fantasy, which celebrates the intersection of pop-culture and fandom with science, research, and NHM’s own collections through thought-provoking discussions, up-close interactions with scientists and artists, and pop-up experiences. Upcoming First Fridays will feature a variety of topics within the overarching theme and will take place at the following dates:

Friday, March 3, 2023: Witches, Wizards, and Magical Powers
Friday, April 7, 2023: Space, Time, and Beyond
Cost: The event is $20 for the public and FREE for Members. Advanced reservations recommended as limited tickets will be available at the door.
