Asian World Film Festival 2023 Key Art Poster Pays Tribute to Lisa Lu

Culver City, CA (December 7, 2023) – The 9th edition of the Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) pays tribute to Lisa Lu (The Last Emperor and Crazy Rich Asian) and the idea is shown in their beautiful poster, which reflects the Festival’s theme for this year: Discovery.

They invite everyone to join Lisa Lu in exploring the diverse realm of Asian cinema. Just as the curtains are drawn back during the opening ceremony of the film festival, Lisa guides the audience, layer by layer, to reveal the different facets of Asian stories, delving into its boundless possibilities – the very essence of this film festival’s theme, “Discover”.

The key visual is designed by Fifth Atrium, a multi-faceted graphic design and animation studio focused on storytelling. Led by their Creative Director Sandra Yu-Shan Yen and Producer Kathleen I-Ying Lee, along with the Visual Designer Yu-Chi Fu and the Design Assistant Richard Urbina, the team has created memorable artwork for this year’s Asian World Film Festival.

“In crafting the overall design, every element is meticulously orchestrated to unfold a visual symphony on the stage. The spotlight gracefully illuminates Lisa Lu’s silhouette, drawing the audience’s gaze inward.” says the Creative Director Sandra Yu-Shan Yen, “As the layers peel away, revealing the iconic red curtain, it symbolizes Lisa’s guiding presence, inviting the audience to explore the boundless possibilities of cinema through her rich experiences.”

Once the curtain lifts, a breathtaking scene unfolds—a path formed by interweaving waves, a metaphor for the undulating narratives in film. Each wave leads the audience through the depths of human stories, creating an immersive journey through the cinematic landscape.

The team has also shared that the choice of the typeface, a serif modern and classic font, adds a timeless touch to the design. Its modern title font design is layered onto the visual tapestry where old meets new. This choice underscores the exploration of new facets of Asian cinema guided by Lisa Lu’s profound experiences.

The color scheme is a choreography in itself, starting with cool tones and building layer upon layer towards warmer hues. As the distant sun sets, gradients of light paint the sky, mirroring the diverse cultural landscapes depicted in Asian cinema. Each film presented becomes a vessel, transporting the audience to different cultural backgrounds and the profound depths of emotion.

Together, the design elements harmonize, creating an immersive experience that transcends the visual and delves deep into the heart of Asian cinema, guided by the luminous presence of Lisa Lu.
