Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting Clinches Historic Gold in Women’s Boxing at Paris Olympics

LAPost/Paris; August 10th, 2024 – On the afternoon of the 10th, in the Paris Olympics women’s 57kg boxing final, Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting made history by securing a dominant 5-0 victory over 20-year-old Polish boxer Julia Szeremeta. This victory not only earned Taiwan its first-ever Olympic gold medal in boxing but also marked the Chinese Taipei team’s second gold of the current Games.

From the start, Lin showcased her prowess by effectively using her long left jab to keep Szeremeta at a distance, setting up powerful combinations. Her speed and precision overwhelmed her opponent, leading to decisive 5-0 scores in the first two rounds. Despite Szeremeta’s attempts to close the gap and engage in close combat during the third round, Lin maintained her dominance, ultimately sealing her victory with another 5-0 round.

As Lin’s hand was raised in triumph, the crowd erupted in applause, with Chinese Taipei flags waving throughout the stands. In a display of sportsmanship, Lin held the ropes open for Szeremeta to exit the ring before she herself knelt at the center, bowing her head to the Paris 2024 logo in a moment of quiet reflection.

Following her win, Lin shared a joyful moment with her team, giving one of her coaches a celebratory piggyback ride.

At 29, Lin has built an impressive career as an Olympic-style boxer, having won world championships in 2018 and 2022. Despite a setback last year when she was disqualified and stripped of a bronze medal at the world championships, Lin’s resilience and skill have carried her to the pinnacle of her sport.

Lin’s success has garnered strong support from her home country, with former President Tsai Ing-wen posting a message of congratulations on social media. While Lin has largely focused her public comments on her performances and expressed gratitude to her opponents and fans, she remains a symbol of perseverance and excellence in the face of adversity.
