2024 “Top 10 Cultural and Artistic Events in the Chinese Community of Southern California” Announced

LAPost, Los Angeles (December 25, 2024) – The Chinese American NGO Research Institute, North American Chinese New Media Polling Center, and the English-language Los Angeles Post jointly unveiled the results of the “2024 Top 10 Cultural and Artistic Events in the Chinese Community of Southern California” on December 25. These rankings were based on professional surveys, assessing the events’ content reach, influence, and media attention, alongside comprehensive statistical methods incorporating online search rankings, social media traffic, and engagement metrics.

This is the third consecutive year that these organizations have released the rankings. The selection process was conducted independently, with no prior contact or influence from individuals or organizations involved in the events. The results were simultaneously published in both Chinese and English.

The organizers noted the increasing number of cultural and artistic events led or organized by the Chinese community in Southern California. This initiative aims to encourage greater cultural exchange between the Chinese community and the broader mainstream society through high-quality cultural, artistic, and sports events. It also seeks to inspire the Chinese community to actively innovate in preserving, disseminating, and developing Chinese culture, fostering a sustainable cycle of growth and creativity. By empowering cultural activities, the initiative aims to amplify their reach and impact.

The rankings reflect the diversity of cultural and artistic (including sports) events within the Chinese community in Southern California. These events showcased impressive planning, scale, creativity, and professionalism, aligning with the digital era’s dynamics. From new interpretations of Chinese culture to bold experiments integrating technology and art, this year’s list highlighted surprising and innovative cultural phenomena. Notably, this is the first year two events by the same artist were featured in the rankings.

2024 Top 10 Cultural and Artistic Events in the Chinese Community of Southern California

  1. February 1 – UCLA Professor Zhang Jingjue and Dr. Leung Po Wah from Hong Kong Education University hosted a Cantonese opera lecture at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in Chinatown, Los Angeles. To foster interest among younger generations, Professor Zhang donated seed funding to establish a Cantonese opera program at the affiliated Confucian School.
  2. March 20 – A special screening of the Chinese New Year blockbuster Hot and Spicy was held at the Sony Pictures Studio in Los Angeles. Director and lead actress Jia Ling attended, engaging in a post-screening Q&A session with guests. The event received significant attention from mainstream and social media.
  3. March 24 – The “Student Filmmakers and the Global Expansion of Chinese Film” youth forum was co-hosted in San Marino by the Chinese American Youth Federation, Los Angeles Chinese Film and Television Artists Association, and the Los Angeles Post. The forum explored collaborative strategies during the peak of Chinese film’s global outreach.
  4. April 18 – The 2024 “NengLink Smart Cup” Chinese American Amateur Golf Invitational took place at Black Gold Golf Club in Yorba Linda. Featuring the largest prize pool in the tournament’s history, the event attracted top amateur golfers from Southern California’s Chinese community.
  5. May 1 – Stanford University Hoover Institution researcher Dr. Guo Daijun launched a lecture series titled “Revisiting the History of WWII” for Los Angeles scholars in film and culture. The series has become one of the most academically significant WWII research events in recent years.
  6. July 21 – The inaugural “American Hanfu Teenager Pageant,” organized by Lizi Studio, took place at the Bowers Museum in Orange County. The event encouraged second-generation Chinese American teens to showcase the elegance of Hanfu and Chinese culture to the local community.
  7. September 13 – USC and the China National Academy of Arts co-hosted the exhibition Reunion: Mei Lanfang and America at the USC East Asian Library. The exhibit commemorated the 130th anniversary of Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang’s birth and his historic visit to the U.S.
  8. September 13 – The USC Pacific Asia Museum and Getty Center jointly launched Cai Guo-Qiang: A Journey of Materials. Internationally renowned contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang guided over 50 media representatives through his creative process, offering deep insights into his works.
  9. September 15 – Cai Guo-Qiang collaborated with Getty Center and USC to present a large-scale daytime fireworks and drone show at the LA Memorial Coliseum. The event captivated over 5,000 spectators and drew widespread attention across Los Angeles.
  10. December 14-15 – Dr. Gao Panpan, a culinary installation artist from Northern California, hosted Flower Feast, an immersive food art exhibit in San Marino. Inspired by artist Sanyu’s floral masterpieces, the event blended natural elements with culinary artistry, creating a unique sensory journey.
