Solis Introduces Motion for Community Outreach Amid Rising Waste Collection Rates in Rowland Heights and South Diamond Bar
Los Angeles, CA – Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Chair Pro Tem Hilda L. Solis to direct the Department of Public Works to conduct community outreach in multiple languages to explain the procurement process and the new residential waste collection rate for the unincorporated areas of Rowland Heights and South Diamond Bar with Athens Services. This motion amends Item 32 to exclude the Rowland Heights franchise hauler approval for the January 7th, 2025 Board Meeting.
Supervisor Solis issued the following statement regarding this motion:
“Rowland Heights and the surrounding communities have a high percent of older adults living on fixed incomes who may potentially be subjected to the highest rate. These increases may make essential waste services unaffordable for residents who depend on them, especially older adults.
Our residents deserve the right to know about rate increases impacting their utility services ahead of time, and furthermore deserve an opportunity to know why and provide feedback when possible. While I understand the need for the Department of Public Works to consider these increases, our responsibility as the County must always be to do our due diligence to inform the public. Today’s motion reaffirms my commitment to uplifting the voices in our First District communities, including those in the Rowland Heights and surrounding areas.”
