Solis Highlights Budget Pressures, Federal Threats to Safety Net at FY 2025–26 Public Hearing
Los Angeles, Calif. — Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis today issued the below statement following the Fiscal Year 2025–26 Budget Public Hearing:
“Today’s public hearing is an important step in the County’s budget process, as it allows the Board to hear directly from residents and stakeholders on the services and programs they would like funded in the upcoming fiscal year, which starts on July 1, 2025.
At the same time, the County continues to face significant fiscal challenges. These include the long-term costs of consent decrees in our jail and probation systems, slowing property tax revenues, the economic impact of recent wildfires, and ongoing labor negotiations. Moreover, the recent approval of a $4 billion settlement related to child sex abuse cases is a profound and painful milestone—one that underscores our enduring responsibility to protect the children entrusted to our care.
I am also deeply concerned by funding cuts proposed by the Trump administration. These efforts to dismantle critical safety net programs are already having serious consequences for our most vulnerable residents, threatening essential services such as housing, healthcare, food assistance, and public health.
While the Board approved the CEO’s Recommended Budget last month, adoption of the budget will occur in June. Public input is an essential part of the process to ensure transparency and accountability. I want to thank all residents who participated today through public testimony, called in, or provided written testimony.
Your voice matters. Despite limited resources and growing external pressures, I remain committed to doing everything possible to meet this moment with the urgency and integrity it demands.”
Although today’s Budget Public Hearing has concluded, written testimony will be accepted for the formal record until 5:00 p.m. on May 16, 2025. Submissions can be made at https://publiccomment.bos.
