Summer Stars Tutoring Program To Support Young Learners Returns this Summer
Free In-Person Tutoring in Reading & Math for Grades 1 – 6 at 45 Locations Across the County
Los Angeles County, CA – LA County Library’s Summer Stars tutoring program returns June 17, providing free in-person support for students in grades 1 – 6. Designed in direct response to community feedback, the program helps young learners strengthen foundational skills in reading and math through small-group sessions led by credentialed tutors.
The Summer Stars tutoring program was established thanks to a County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors motion, authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn, which was unanimously approved in October 2023.
“Summer shouldn’t be a setback for our kids, it should be a springboard,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “By turning our LA County Library locations into free, high‑quality tutoring hubs again this year, we’re giving every child the chance to walk into the new school year confident and prepared, no matter their family’s financial situation.”
“Every child deserves the chance to feel confident in the classroom, and Summer Stars is one way we’re helping to make that possible,” said Skye Patrick, County Librarian at LA County Library. “This program provides free, in-person academic support in communities that need it most by helping students strengthen key skills, stay engaged over the summer, and feel prepared for the school year ahead.”
Summer Stars features two 4-week sessions:
Session 1: Reading | June 17 – July 10, 2025 (June 10 – July 3 at La Puente Library only)*
Session 2: Math | July 15 – August 7, 2025 (July 8 – July 31 at La Puente Library only)
Tutoring is held Tuesday through Thursday afternoons at participating locations, and students attend a 30‑minute session each day. Tutoring is provided by StudentNest, an experienced educational partner with more than 20 years of experience delivering academic support to students across the country.
Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to complete an interest form as soon as possible.
*There will be no tutoring on Thursday, June 19 as all library locations will be closed in observance of Juneteenth. Appointments will not be rescheduled.
