Solis Reappoints Hahns Johnson to Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission

LOS ANGELES, Calif. July 3, 2025 – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to reappoint Hans Johnson to the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission (COC), reaffirming Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis’ continued confidence in his leadership and service.

Johnson, a respected advocate in civil rights, LGBTQ+ issues, and public safety reform, has served on the COC since 2022, helping to guide its mission of strengthening oversight and rebuilding public trust in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“Civilian oversight remains essential to restoring and maintaining the public’s trust in our systems of public safety,” said Chair Pro Tem Solis. “Hans Johnson has been a powerful force for accountability during his time on the Commission. His reappointment ensures continuity in the COC’s independent and courageous work to uphold justice and responsible policing.”

With more than two decades of experience in criminal justice reform and community advocacy, Johnson has worked in over 20 states to support local leaders, track hate crimes, and train public safety personnel in cultural competency. Johnson currently serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Commission. He is president of Progressive Victory, a national consultancy specializing in advocacy strategy and good governance. His work with foundations, labor unions, and civil rights organizations spans all 50 states. A longtime trainer and columnist, he has led national efforts to combat hate crimes and protect access to public health. Johnson resides in Eagle Rock with his partner of 18 years.

Since joining the COC, Johnson has led key reform initiatives, including chairing the Technology Committee and founding the Governance Committee. He authored influential reports on Tasers and drones, recommending safeguards to protect public health, safety, and privacy. He also played a leading role in the Commission’s landmark 2023 report on deputy gangs, pressing for greater accountability from the Sheriff’s Department. Johnson has prioritized community engagement, organizing public forums in East Los Angeles on use of force, jail conditions, and other pressing concerns. His efforts have strengthened the Commission’s internal practices and deepened its connection with justice-impacted communities.
