Los Angeles County Proclaims October 13, 2025, as Indigenous Peoples Day
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a motion by Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis proclaiming Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, as Indigenous Peoples Day, continuing the County’s commitment to recognizing and honoring Indigenous communities.
This proclamation builds on the County’s landmark decision in 2018 to officially replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day, a change initiated by a 2017 motion authored by Chair Pro Tem Solis. The original motion directed County Counsel to draft an ordinance removing Columbus Day as an official County holiday and establishing Indigenous Peoples Day, observed annually on the second Monday of October.
“Indigenous Peoples Day represents a vital step toward truth, justice, and honoring the rich cultural heritage of Native peoples,” said Chair Pro Tem Solis. “Los Angeles County sits on the ancestral homelands of the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash peoples, whose stewardship and traditions have shaped this region for thousands of years.”
The County is home to the largest population of American Indian and Alaska Native residents of any county in the United States. Yet Indigenous communities continue to face the lasting impacts of colonization and systemic discrimination, as well as ongoing threats to tribal sovereignty, sacred lands, and cultural heritage.
“Today’s proclamation acknowledges these realities and reaffirms our commitment to stand with Indigenous peoples,” added Chair Pro Tem Solis. “In the face of federal actions that threaten tribal rights and cultural identity, this day is a call to educate, celebrate, and support Native communities now and into the future.”
By officially designating Indigenous Peoples Day each year, Los Angeles County encourages residents to engage with events and educational activities that raise awareness of Indigenous histories, celebrate their resilience, and promote healing and reconciliation.
