State Experts to Brief AAPI and Black Media on Two Key Issues: Mortgage Disaster Relief and Vehicle Safety Recall
SACRAMENTO – The Governor’s Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications (OCPSC), in collaboration with the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) and the California New Motor Vehicle Board, will host an Ethnic Media Forum on Thursday, November 20, at 11:30 a.m. to connect AAPI and Black communities with crucial information from two major statewide initiatives.
This virtual briefing will feature state experts and community voices sharing updates and personal stories highlighting:
1. CalAssist Mortgage Fund – A newly expanded state program offering up to $20,000 in mortgage payment grants to California homeowners whose homes were destroyed or severely damaged by recent disasters. With income limits raised—up to $211,050 in Los Angeles County—thousands more families can now qualify for assistance.
2. “Check to Protect” Vehicle Safety Recall Campaign – A statewide initiative that encourages drivers to check the recall status of their vehicles and have any open recalls fixed for FREE immediately. California leads the nation with over 6 million unrepaired vehicles, many of them in communities of color, rural areas, and low-income neighborhoods. This campaign highlights how a quick, free check at CheckToProtect.org can save lives.
The forum will feature testimonials from affected families and expert insights from CalHFA and New Motor Vehicle Board. Presenters will discuss how these programs address disparities that disproportionately impact African American and AAPI Californians, ensuring equitable access to critical state services.
