Supervisor Alan Wong Addresses Recent Power Outage Affecting Sunset District
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (January 27, 2026) – Supervisor Alan Wong today issued an update regarding a power outage that impacted parts of the Outer Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods, affecting approximately 4,676 customers, including residents and small businesses along key commercial corridors. According to PG&E, crews investigated the cause of the outage and initially estimated restoration by 8:15 p.m. Power ultimately restored about an hour after the outage began, at approximately 6:57 p.m.
“Power outages are difficult for our neighbors, especially families, seniors, and small businesses who depend on reliable service,” said Supervisor Alan Wong. “When the outage occurred, multiple constituents contacted my office immediately, and we reached out to PG&E to get clarity before any formal notice was provided. Learning about an outage from residents rather than directly from the utility is a serious concern.”
Supervisor Alan Wong noted that this incident highlights the same communication gaps his office formally raised in a December 11 letter to PG&E, which called for more timely and proactive notification to residents, and businesses during power outages.
“This is not the first time we’ve raised this issue,” Supervisor Alan Wong said. “Timely communication is not optional. It’s essential for public safety, community trust, and minimizing harm.”
Local small businesses experienced immediate impacts due to their reliance on electricity to operate.
“We rely heavily on online orders and digital devices for customers to place orders,” said Simon Kuang, owner of Foam Tea House & Cafe on Taraval Street. “Because the estimated restoration time was over two hours, we had to cancel all existing orders through our to-go apps and online platforms. We’re hoping customers will place their orders again once power is restored.”
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many neighborhood restaurants and cafes have shifted to QR-code menus, app-based ordering systems, and digital point-of-sale platforms. Most businesses also rely entirely on electronic payment systems, including credit card machines, making it difficult or impossible to operate during extended outages.
Supervisor Alan Wong will convene a February 12 public hearing to ensure residents have a direct voice and accountability and transparency in addressing ongoing reliability and communication concerns with PG&E.
