ELAC Architecture Students Awarded in LA County Design Competition

Monterey Park, CA — Four East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Architecture students were awarded 1st and 2nd place in the L.A. County-sponsored Bus Shelter Prototype Design Competition. Under the guidance of ELAC Professor Scott Callihan in his Environmental Design 102 course the following students and their designs were awarded:
1st Place: “Three Steps” Jimmy Maceda, Jose Garcia.   2nd Place: “Right on Time”, Hugo Torres, V Trujillo .
Each place was awarded, $5,000 and $3,000, respectively. But more significantly, this accomplishment, will increase their momentum and increase their confidence in their abilities. I want to thank professor Callihan and Dean Dr. Laura Cantu for their help. Their dedication to our students is inspiring,” said ELAC Architecture Chair Alexis Navarro.
These students were also listed in the L.A. County 1st District E-Newsletter and will be receiving Scrolls signed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors at an upcoming board meeting. the jury for the contest consisted of MTA officials, County officers and consultants to whom all participants presented their work from ELAC, LACC, and Rio Hondo colleges.
“The whole class worked on the first phase of this project, researching public transportation, understanding the needs and issues, and creating designs to respond to the needs of the public. The students then chose the top 3 designs to submit for the competition. The three finalist teams spent a lot of time outside of class to refine their designs and create the final presentation documents. They put in a lot of extra effort above and beyond the class assignments and I’m really proud of them,” said professor Callihan.
“Design studios have been the hardest for our Architecture students to do in an online environment. These kinds of classes rely on a lot of hands-on techniques for drawing, building models, and interacting and learning from peers. It’s a real testament to the students’ talent and dedication to have this kind of success under all the constraints of the pandemic,” continued Callihan.
