24-25 DANCE SERIES LINEUP

Complexions Contemporary Ballet | September 20, 2024

Hailed as “game changing” by London’s The Guardian and a “matchless American dance company” by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Complexions transcends dance tradition through a groundbreaking approach to the art. Founded in 1994 by Master Choreographer Dwight Rhoden and the legendary dancer Desmond Richardson, Complexions blends methods, styles and cultures by fusing classical and contemporary ballet, hip-hop, jazz, and modern techniques, resulting in a continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world — and all its cultures — as an interrelated whole.

The company has performed at every major venue and many festivals throughout the United States and across the globe. For its 30th Anniversary, Complexions will perform FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, a brand-new work featuring the music of U2. In this raw and unfiltered piece choreographed by Dwight Rhoden, 16 dancers move as one to share the vibrancy of stories told by the music and lyrics from “Songs of Surrender,” U2’s latest release. The performance is both moving and uplifting, leaving the audience with a sense of hope for what’s to come.

Sergio Bernal Dance Company | November 9, 2024

Globally celebrated as “exhilarating and enchanting” (The Guardian), former Principal Dancer of the Ballet Nacional de España Sergio Bernal completed his first evening-length program in the U.S. at The Joyce Theater and continues to dazzle audiences worldwide.

Created by Bernal and choreographer Ricardo Cue, A Night with Sergio Bernal melds the bravado and speed of Spanish flamenco with the grace and precision of ballet. Accompanied by three masterful musicians and fellow award-winning flamenco dancers, Bernal pushes both forms towards a new frontier.

American Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker | December 13-22, 2024

SoCal’s favorite holiday tradition returns with American Ballet Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of The Nutcracker. Created by one of today’s most celebrated choreographers, Alexei Ratmansky, this dazzling holiday treat features ABT’s roster of superstar dancers, gorgeous sets and costumes by Tony winner Richard Hudson, and Pacific Symphony playing Tchaikovsky’s timeless score.

The Nutcracker is the tale of a young girl, Clara, who receives the gift of a nutcracker doll at her family’s Christmas party. In her dreams that night, the nutcracker doll comes to life as a handsome prince who joins her on a magical journey. Together, they travel to lands filled with dancing snowflakes, waltzing flowers, a mouse army, and other exotic characters, all brought to vivid life on stage by a cast of over 100 performers!

Martha Graham Dance Company | January 18, 2025

Known as one of the most influential forces of the 20th century, Martha Graham presented her first performance on April 18, 1926. Since that date, considered to be the launch of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Graham’s groundbreaking and uniquely American style of dance has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

To celebrate its Centennial, the Company is organizing an extensive series of programs and events exploring the diversity and depth of Graham’s extraordinary artistic legacy. GRAHAM100 will feature performances, new productions, exhibitions, film screenings, and more activities that build on the Company’s legacy of innovation and its present and future vision.

GRAHAM100 continues in 2024–25, curated under the theme, Dances of the Mind, focusing on Graham’s psychological works, multifaceted women characters, and longtime artistic partnership with renowned visual artist Isamu Noguchi. Works to be presented—including Phaedra (1962), Errand into the Maze (1947), and Herodiade (1944)—foreground Graham’s command of complex ideas illustrated in movement and augmented with modernist sets and original scores. Graham’s long and fruitful collaboration with Noguchi will be explored on stage and through audience engagement.

Alonzo King LINES Ballet | February 7, 2025

LINES Ballet presents a reimagining of The Collective Agreement, and 2013’s Concerto for Two Violins. Originally commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet in 2018, The Collective Agreement, Alonzo King’s acclaimed collaboration with jazz pianist Jason Moran, takes on new life in a transformative re-envisioning by King, the LINES Ballet dancers, and light installation artist Jim Campbell.

Their artistic alchemy will infuse the ballet with new resonance. “We are, as a community, trying to reach wholeness,” King says. “How do we come together?” The intimate duets and ensembles echo the rising tempo of composer Moran’s original score, his first for a symphony orchestra and his eighth for LINES Ballet. The music was recorded live for this performance by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, with Moran on piano.

In addition, King and the company will present a world premiere along with a reprise of 2013’s Concerto for Two Violins, which turns the layers of fugue and counterpoint of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 1730 work into metaphors of human relationships.

Twyla Tharp 60th Anniversary | February 15 & 16, 2025

Showcasing Tharp’s uncanny and witty use of music to create work of startling originality and beauty, the two dances once again ensure Tharp’s place as one of the great artists of our time. Don’t miss this groundbreaking evening of stellar dancing and phenomenal musicianship.

The first and only choreographer to take on the intensely demanding and demonically complex “Diabelli Variations,” Tharp makes visible the elegant humor and depth of the composer’s layered genius. With each section of the Beethoven piece, unique in mood and texture, Tharp’s response—tender, teasing, transcendent, cheeky—commands all of its performers’ technical prowess—and energy—as they change effortlessly from ballet to jazz, to modern, with unexpected bits of social and street dance for good measure.

Almost two centuries later in years and spirit is Philip Glass’s “Aguas da Amazonia,” arranged and recorded by members of Third Coast Percussion in close collaboration with Tharp and performed on a unique collection of custom-designed percussion instruments.

This groundbreaking evening is not one to be missed and is sure to dazzle audiences with its stellar dancing and phenomenal musicianship.

American Ballet Theatre’s A Winter’s Tale | April 3-6, 2025

Shakespeare’s great romance gets a magical reimagining through the power of dance with Christopher Wheeldon’s The Winter’s Tale. Widely considered a modern classic, the ballet follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a seemingly miraculous return to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. The Winter’s Tale is an award-winning modern ballet classic, packed with emotional turmoil heightened by Joby Talbot’s compelling score and Bob Crowley’s atmospheric designs.

Ballet Folklorico De Mexico | March 22, 2025

Founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández brings together the music, dance and costume of Mexican folklore from pre-Colombian civilizations to the modern era. The Ballet is permanently in residence at the iconic Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and has choreographed over 120 ballets, comprised of 60 folk dancers and musicians who continue to perform extensively across Mexico and abroad.

Amalia Hernández, the visionary, and pioneer revolutionized the concept of Mexican traditional dance and forever transformed its history. Hernández devoted her time to the research of the folklore, music, costumes, and dance of the states that comprise Mexico, and uniquely brought them to life creating performances that are a true portrait of Mexico’s beauty, diversity and rich history through music and dance. Her repertoire has become a classic – one that is renewed, transformed, and enriched with the passage of time.

The company has reached over 45 million spectators worldwide and has received countless awards and accolades, positioning itself as the premier folkloric dance ensemble in Mexico and around the world.

Miami City Ballet’s Swan Lake | June 19-22, 2025

There is a reason Swan Lake has remained the world’s most beloved classical ballet for more than a century. It is an achingly beautiful fairytale told through unparalleled virtuosic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s indelible score that has long surpassed the test of time. It tells the story of young Prince Siegfried who falls in love with Princess Odette. Odette and her companions transform into swans under the spell cast by evil sorcerer Baron von Rothbart. Their days are spent gracefully gliding on a lake only to return to their human form at night. The only thing that can break the spell is true love and Rothbart will do anything in his power to stop it.

The sold-out New York Times Best in Dance smash hit makes a triumphant return to the Miami City Ballet repertoire! Following its North American premiere in our 2021/2022 season, this “crisp and refreshingly clean” (The New York Times) sophisticated interpretation of Swan Lake, lovingly reconstructed by the renowned Alexei Ratmansky, will enchant audiences once again.

Over fifty of MCB’s phenomenally talented dancers “lend flavor and picturesque richness” to Tchaikovsky’s splendid score, brought to life by MCB’s glorious live orchestra, creating a luminous production of a classic that is all its own.

Described by The New York Times as “an exceptional troupe, by Balanchine standards, anywhere in the world,” Miami City Ballet (MCB) is led by Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez and is considered a leader in the field – nurturing new choreographic voices, creating innovative collaborations and opening new avenues of inclusivity within classical ballet.
