Chinese-Americans Reflect on U.S. Presidential Debate: Both Sides Mobilizing Their Own Bases
LAPost, September 10, 2024 – Liu Zhaoning, who previously studied in the U.S., shared his thoughts after watching the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. He found it interesting that neither candidate seemed to attempt to reach the opposing camp’s supporters or appeal to undecided voters. Instead, the debate felt more like an effort to mobilize their own political bases.
Yi Bo, a law professor, also shared his experience of watching the debate from a hotel in Rio de Janeiro. He paid special attention to the discussion regarding China. According to his count, China was mentioned seven times during the debate. Trump highlighted his tough stance on China and criticized the Biden administration for being too soft, particularly in handling the chip industry issue. Harris, in contrast, argued that Trump’s record on national security and foreign policy raised concerns, suggesting that he could be easily manipulated by foreign leaders.
Yi concluded, “Whether it’s Trump or Harris who wins, U.S.-China relations will continue to deteriorate. The best we can do is to try to slow down that deterioration.”
Famed Chinese-American writer Zhang Ci commented on social media, likening the U.S. debate format to ancient Greek political traditions, where the most powerful individuals present their positions to the public. She expressed her anticipation for the final election outcome.
Renowned art historian Cao Xingyuan also weighed in, praising Harris for her eloquence and polished political demeanor, while noting that Trump seemed somewhat overshadowed.
Jeremy, a Chinese student at Columbia University, wrote a post on Xiaohongshu titled “Trump Lost Tonight,” in which he opined that Harris outperformed both Biden and, to some extent, Trump. He observed that Trump, although less aggressive than in past debates, appeared on the defensive when facing Harris’s attacks.
During the debate, Harris’s lead widened in the PredictIt market, and stocks related to reproductive rights and abortion saw an uptick. Notably, pop singer Taylor Swift later posted on Instagram endorsing Harris’s campaign, further boosting Harris’s momentum.
