Taiwan Literature Emerging Translator Mentorship Program Now Open for Applications
LAPost/Los Angeles, Ca (Sept. 11, 2024) – In an effort to cultivate talent in translating Taiwanese literature and promote the publication of English translations, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, in collaboration with the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), is once again hosting the ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program for 2025. The program is now accepting applications from emerging translators of Taiwanese literature, with a deadline set for November 30, 2024 (Pacific Time).
To qualify, applicants must have published no more than one full-length translation work. The selected translator will receive mentorship from an experienced professional, with support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, and engage in a nine-month program starting in February 2025. Participants will also present their translated works at ALTA’s annual conference, the largest literary translation event in the U.S., offering opportunities to network with translators and publishers worldwide. Translators with an interest in Taiwanese literature are encouraged to apply.
The 2025 mentorship will be led by award-winning translator Jin Ling, a recipient of the PEN America Short Story Prize. Jin has translated a range of works, including the youth biography comic series The Child from Qingshui and Wandering Taiwan, a novel by Golden Tripod Award winner Yang Shuangzi.
Founded in 1978, ALTA is dedicated to promoting literary translation. Since 2015, the Emerging Translator Mentorship Program has paired seasoned translators with emerging talent to translate literary works into English, supporting 71 translators in 25 languages to date.
