Secretary Antony J. Blinken Joins Ukrainian and UK Foreign Ministers in Kyiv
Kyiv, Ukraine – September 11, 2024 – At a joint press event in Kyiv, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized their nations’ unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression.
Foreign Minister Sybiha expressed Ukraine’s gratitude for U.S. and UK assistance, highlighting the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s military, particularly with air defense systems like F-16s and armored vehicles. Sybiha noted that Iran’s provision of ballistic missiles to Russia presents a significant threat not only to Ukraine but also to Europe and the Middle East. He called for continued sanctions on Russia and the use of frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine.
Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Ukraine’s victory and its future as a strong, independent democracy. He announced additional U.S. support, including $325 million for Ukraine’s energy grid, $290 million for humanitarian aid, and $102 million for demining efforts. Blinken emphasized that Ukraine’s path to NATO and European Union membership remains a priority for both the U.S. and UK.
Blinken’s remarks underscored that global support for Ukraine will endure, regardless of political changes, and that the U.S. and UK stand united with dozens of other countries in backing Ukraine’s defense, economic resilience, and long-term democratic goals.
As Ukraine continues to fight back against Russia’s brutal invasion, Blinken noted the substantial progress made in military, economic, and democratic reforms, with Ukraine emerging as a critical part of Europe’s future.
