Chair Pro Tem Hilda L. Solis Issues Statement Following Major Fires in Los Angeles County

Los Angeles, CA (January 8th, 2025) – Today, Chair Pro Tem Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement regarding the numerous fires that have broken out in an unprecedented wind event since Tuesday, January 7th, 2025.

“Los Angeles County is experiencing several major fires due to an unprecedented wind event, and each of these fires have displaced thousands of Angelenos. The Board of Supervisors has declared a State of Emergency in order to mobilize aid and support for residents and families affected by these fires. My office is working closely alongside our County Departments, cities, state, and federal partners across all jurisdictions to ensure we are acting swiftly to meet the moment and responding to the needs of our residents.

I am wishing all those injured, displaced, or otherwise impacted by this fire safety during this time, and would like to express my deepest gratitude to our first responders, Los Angeles County Sheriffs and Fire Departments, community partners who have shared their own resources and shelters for impacted residents and animals, and volunteers for coming together at this critical time. I also want to express gratitude to Governor Gavin Newsom and the Biden-Harris administration for responding quickly to our call for help.

We are still in the midst of this challenge and I urge everyone to stay alert. Please continue to heed evacuation calls and warnings and check in on your neighbors and loved ones.”

Los Angeles County residents can take the following steps to stay prepared:

  • Assemble an Emergency Kit: Include flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, water, a manual can opener, and a battery-powered radio.
  • Charge Devices in Advance: Ensure cell phones and backup power banks are fully charged before the winds begin.
  • Check on Neighbors: Elderly neighbors, residents with disabilities, and those with mobility or special needs may require additional help during power outages. Make sure they have what they need and are safe.
  • Have a Backup Plan for Medical Equipment: If you or someone in your household relies on powered medical devices, make arrangements for alternative power sources.
  • Secure Outdoor Items: High winds can turn unsecured objects into dangerous projectiles. Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and trash bins.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates and power outage alerts through trusted news sources, your utility provider, Alert LA County, and other local emergency notification systems.
