Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has released its Sustainability Report 2018 under the theme, “Making a Difference.”
The report, now in its eighth edition, reviews key sustainability milestones and achievements of the company. Operating in around 50 countries, with a workforce of more than 33,000 employees, including 1,270 scientists, SABIC has made significant achievements in multiple areas, such as innovation and sustainability solutions, circular economy, climate change, energy and resource efficiency, supply chain, and EHSS. These achievements have contributed considerably to the company’s growth and have strengthened its relationships with customers and communities.
SABIC’s materiality process, which determines strategic priorities, was refreshed in 2018, resulting in six core priorities and nine new areas to drive business progress. Focusing on these areas will help SABIC drive performance and transform the company to thrive in tomorrow’s world.
SABIC has continued its efforts in sustainability on various levels. Most importantly, it collaborated with Plastic Energy to convert low quality mixed plastics into valuable raw materials for its operations in Europe. SABIC also launched an initiative to develop a chemical-recycling pilot plant that converts pyrolysis oil derived from plastic waste into valuable feedstock.
The report addresses SABIC’s commitment to achieving sustainability objectives by recording reductions in the GHG density, energy and water consumption, material waste, flare emissions, and total CO2 use. Environment-related incidents recorded a 14 percent decline, which is the company’s best performance since 2011.
