LACCD Trustee Mike Fong Launches Campaign for State Assembly

Alhambra, CA – Los Angeles Community College District Trustee and longtime community leader Mike Fong announced his candidacy for California’s 49th Assembly District today. Fong has represented more than half of the Assembly District as an elected college trustee for the past six years.

In announcing his campaign, Fong released the following statement:

“The public health and economic challenges we face are unprecedented, but so are the opportunities that now exist to create good and lasting public policy. I’m running for State Assembly because I love California, and I want to implement new ideas and long-term solutions aimed at protecting public health, creating jobs, expanding workforce development and high growth sector training programs, fully funding public schools and expanding access to quality higher education, fighting for immigrant and civil rights, and protecting our environment. I’m excited to launch our campaign, and I’m looking forward to the many conversations that lay ahead with residents in the dynamic and diverse communities of the 49th Assembly District.”

Fong is seeking to succeed State Assemblymember Ed Chau, although he will not run against Assemblymember Chau if he seeks re-election. The 49th Assembly District includes the cities of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City and portions of Montebello, and South El Monte.

As an elected trustee on the board of America’s largest community college district, Mike Fong works to increase student access to higher education, expand workforce training, and improve the quality of educational opportunities available at Los Angeles’s nine Community Colleges. Professionally, Fong serves as Director of Policy and Government Relations for the City of Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment.  He previously served as the East Area Director for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Fong serves on the board of Goodwill Southern California and on the advisory board for LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program. His long record of community service also includes having served as chair of the PBS Southern California Asian Pacific Islander Community Council, a member of the White Memorial Medical Center Community Leadership Council, and chair of the California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus, and as president of the Asian Pacific Alumni of UCLA.

A lifelong L.A. County resident, Fong holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Master of Public Administration from California State University at Northridge.
