Palmdale Becomes the 28th City to Vote No Confidence in DA Gascon

Palmdale, CA – Last night, the Palmdale City Council voted in a 4-1 decision to issue a resolution of No Confidence in Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon and his directives issued on his first day of taking office. The only dissent was Juan Carrillo.

Palmdale became the 28th city in Los Angeles County whose city council has voted No Confidence in Gascon, in addition to Rosemead School District and a few LA City Neighborhood Councils. The vote came after extensive discussion and commentary offered last month by community members, reports from law enforcement, along with statements offered by victims impacted as a result of Gascon’s directive and those who work in the District Attorney’s office. There are now over 30% of cities in the county that have expressed concerns to the District Attorney over these directives. I

In a letter from the District Attorney provided by Councilmember Carrillo, Gascon attempted to respond to the concerns. However, his response failed to address the voters’ will on Prop 25 and the limitation of the Humphrey decision referenced, the actual study cited on misdemeanor prosecution, and that sentence enhancements are not purely about sentencing, but about charges that represent of the actual facts of a case. DA Gascon has refused to attend in person any city council meeting that has placed an item for a No Confidence discussion/vote on the agenda.

Last night, the Glendale City Council also discussed the directives of DA Gascon, though not in any context of a vote of No Confidence. After the discussion, councilmembers unanimously voted to send a letter to DA Gascon to reconsider those directives causing tremendous concern for so many county residents.
