International champion magician from Hong Kong help ring in Year of the Rabbit at spring reception in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, CA (February 01, 2023) – Louis Yan, an internationally recognized champion magician from Hong Kong, was invited by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco (HKETO San Francisco) to perform at its spring reception in Los Angeles on February 1 to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The reception was attended by more than 150 guests, including diplomats, local officials and members of
academia and business as well as community leaders in Southern California.

Speaking at the reception, the Director of HKETO San Francisco, Ms Jacko Tsang said, “Hong Kong is open for business. Both international travel and travel between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China are now quarantine-free. Business and leisure travellers are welcome to Hong Kong and mainland China to reconnect with business partners, explore Hong Kong and the great opportunities offered by the city.”
Speaking about new initiatives to attract enterprises and talents to Hong Kong, Ms Tsang added that, “a new Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises (OASES), has been set up under the leadership of the Financial Secretary to proactively attract strategic enterprises from industries including life and health technology, AI and data science, financial technology, advanced manufacturing, new materials and new-energy technology. The Government has also set up a new Talents Service Unit (TSU) to provide one-stop talent recruitment service. A new Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS) has been launched to make it easier for individuals earning no less than US$320,000 annually, or graduates of the world's top 100 universities, to go to Hong Kong for up to two years to explore career opportunities and experience living in the city.”
Ms Tsang also pointed out that HKETO San Francisco has set up a Dedicated Team for Attracting Businesses and Talents to reach out to enterprises and talents and assist them in pursuing their interest in Hong Kong. She encouraged the audience to approach the Dedicated Team for more information.

Bringing joy and luck to the audience, Louis Yan surprised the guests through his interactive magic show themed around Hong Kong elements. Known as the “David Copperfield of Hong Kong”, Louis became the first- ever Hong Kong magician to win first place in two international competitions in 2010, and created the Guinness World Record in 2013 for “The Fastest Time of Escape with Straitjacket and Chains Underwater”, in only 25.75 seconds. He will perform at the receptions in three other cities before departing for Hong Kong.

Professor Ni Yujing, the former deputy dean of the School of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a famous child psychologist, had worked in Hong Kong for 23 years. This year, she is very happy to participate in the reception hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco for the first time in Los Angeles. It is hard to hide her strong Hong Kong complex in her words.
Former Monterey Park Mayor Peter Chan, Chinese American Museum Chairman Dr. Gay Yuen, financial expert Evans Lam, lawyer Wendy Doo and other well-known people who came to the United States from Hong Kong to study and settle in their early years, and Michael Xiong, chairman of the Southern California Chinese Federation , angel investor Luke Lu, young director Shi Tanxuan and others attended the reception that day.
