Sting Operation Busts Unlicensed Contractors in Sonoma County

Sacramento, CA (June 21, 2023)– The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) conducted an undercover sting operation targeting unlicensed contractors in Sonoma County on June 13 and 14, 2023.

CSLB’s Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) collaborated with the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office on the sting operation. The alleged unlicensed contractors were invited to submit bids for various construction projects at a designated property. The sting operation resulted eight individuals being given a notice to appear in criminal court. All may now face legal consequences, which can include substantial fines and potential jail time.

The individuals involved all submitted bids that exceeded the legal limit of $500. The bid amounts ranged from $1,000 for interior painting to $12,000 for exterior painting. California laws prohibit bidding and/or contracting for construction work that exceeds $500 in value, including labor and materials.

“Engaging in contracting work without a valid license is considered a misdemeanor offense in California, carrying substantial penalties that include fines up to $15,000 and potential jail time,” said CSLB Registrar David Fogt. “CSLB remains focused on its mission to enforce these laws, ensuring the protection of consumers from individuals involved in unlicensed contracting activities.”

With the support of other agencies across the state, CSLB will continue to work together to ensure the safety and welfare of California’s homeowners by enforcing the law, promoting consumer protection, and maintaining the integrity of the construction industry. CSLB also reminds the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected unlicensed contracting.
