Nicolas Kiet Quach Assumes the Office of State Chair of the California High School Democrats (CAHSD)

ALHAMBRA, CA – On July 1st, 2023, Nicolas Kiet Quach assumed the position of Chair of the California High School Democrats (CAHSD). CAHSD is a statewide organization affiliated with the California Democratic Party and serves thousands of high school students across the state. Nicolas previously served as the Political Director and Vice Chair this past term. For the 2023 – 2024 term, Nicolas will lead as the organization’s first Vietnamese American Chair.

 

Speaking on his election, Nicolas said, “I am incredibly grateful to have been entrusted by high school students across the state in serving as our organization’s Chair. In 2022, young people came out and made their voices heard through their impactful vote in the midterm elections. I understand the importance of youth involvement and the role they play in the Democratic Party and under my leadership, am dedicated to bringing CAHSD to new heights.”

 

Library Trustee Quach’s passion for politics stems from his background as the son of Vietnamese refugees and growing up low-income & on social services. Speaking on the election, CYD President Giovanni Chavez expressed his support for Library Trustee Quach’s election as CAHSD Chair.

Nicolas Kiet Quach is an Alhambra Library Trustee, student, and education advocate who works to fight for education justice through coalition building and power shifting to young people.

 

As a student of public schools in Alhambra, Nicolas has worked to engage youth across the San Gabriel Valley to develop effective community advocates. In December 2020, he was elected as the Freshman Class President with endorsements from teachers, student leaders, and elected officials including Alhambra Mayor Sasha Renee Perez & Councilman Ross Maza. He was later elected to three additional terms and is now serving as Senior Class President. He served on the Alhambra High School School Site Council.

 

In his tenure of public service and policy, Nicolas was appointed to the City of Alhambra Library Board of Trustees in December 2022 by Mayor Jeff Maloney and later unanimously elected as Library Board President. He is the youngest Library Trustee in the United States. From February 2021 – December 2022, Nicolas served three terms on the City of Alhambra Youth Commission appointed by Mayor Sasha Renee Perez and would later be elected as the youngest President of any city commission in Alhambra history.

 

Nicolas is also the first Vietnamese American Chair of the California High School Democrats and the Los Angeles Regional Director of the California Young Democrats (CYD), the first high school student to serve in this role and the only high school student on the Executive Board. He previously served as the Political Director and Vice Chair of the California High School Democrats (CAHSD). In July 2022, he was hired by Student Voice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which works with students to advance educational equity nationwide. In addition, Nicolas was hired in August 2022 as the Field Director for Project Super Bloom, a youth-led PAC that works to elect progressives to the state Legislature.

 

In addition to his various capacities, he currently serves on the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Student Advisory Council and RACE Forward H.E.A.L Together Advisory Board.

 

Nicolas was recognized by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party in 2022 as Democrat of the Year.
