THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES COVID-19 TENANT PROTECTIONS ARE ENDING FEBRUARY 1
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The City of Los Angeles Declaration of Local Emergency for COVID-19 renter protections are ending. February 1st is the deadline to pay rental arrears for rent owed from October 1, 2021 to January 31, 2023. The renter protection provisions applied to all residential units in the City of Los Angeles and were implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“February 1 marks the end of COVID-19 renter protections in the City of Los Angeles,” said Ann Sewill, General Manager of the Los Angeles Housing Department. “However, tenants cannot be evicted without notice or just cause. I encourage everyone to educate themselves on their rights as tenants at https://housing.lacity.org. ”
Tenants who receive an eviction notice for unpaid rent, also known as an Unlawful Detainer, must respond within five (5) days. Tenants that do not respond within five days risk losing by default without getting a trial. The City urges renters to be informed in an effort to be protected and stay in their homes.
