Legacy Lives On: LA County Library Holds Rededication Event at Claremont Helen Renwick Library

Claremont, CA – Community members, County and City leaders gathered on Wednesday, September 17 at Claremont Helen Renwick Library to celebrate its rededication and honor the woman whose name now graces the building.

The event recognized Helen Renwick, a philanthropist who funded the original construction of Claremont’s library and played a central role in the city’s civic and educational growth.

Speakers included Victoria Paul, representing LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, 5th District, City of Claremont Mayor Corey Calaycay, and Dr. Skye Patrick, County Librarian and Director of LA County Library.

“Libraries are the heart of our communities and Claremont Helen Renwick Library is a shining example of that,” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger. “Helen Renwick’s vision and generosity helped plant the seeds of learning and cultural enrichment here more than a century ago. This rededication ensures her legacy continues to inspire future generations who will come to this library to learn and grow.”

“The rededication of Claremont Helen Renwick Library is a celebration of community, history, and a shared commitment to lifelong learning,” said Dr. Skye Patrick, County Librarian and Director of LA County Library. “We’re honored to recognize Helen Renwick’s remarkable legacy. She was a visionary philanthropist, poet, and cultural advocate whose generosity laid the foundation for this space. As we look to the future, this library will continue to uplift, educate, and connect all who walk through its doors.”

“Looking around today, I see the legacy of Helen Renwick in the many community members that have volunteered their time and talents to making their community better,” said City of Claremont Mayor Corey Calaycay. “Helen Renwick generously donated the land were the library sits and was instrumental in opening the city’s first library. In this same spirit, our Claremont leaders worked with the County of Los Angeles to make this rededication happen in her honor.”

Guests enjoyed giveaways, refreshments sponsored by Friends of the Claremont Library, and opportunities to connect with neighbors.
